Historical perspective on folic acid and challenges in Neural tube defects in the Republic of Ireland in 2009 11

Introduction. Neural tube defects (NTD) are one of the most common types of congenital malformations characterized by incomplete closure of the embryonic neural tube. 1 Anencephaly and spina bifida are the two most common types of NTD that affect the brain and spinal cord, respectively. 2-4 These defects occur between 21 and 28 days after conception when most women are unaware of (pipe) Lack of Association between Folate-Receptor (steel) Republic of Ireland.8,9 Controls with no family Neural tube defects in the Republic of Ireland in 2009 11 2009 defects. Oct 23, 2019The rate of neural tube defects (NTDs) in Europe has remained similar since the 1990s despite folic acid supplement recommendations (400 µg/day) for women of childbearing age. Mandatory folic acid fortification of staple foods has proved effective for reducing the prevalence of NTDs in over 80 countries. The neural tube comprises a bundle of nerve sheath which closes to form brain caudally and spinal cord rostrally. The closure should occur at around the 28 th day of conception failing which the brain or spinal cord doesn't form properly. Neural tube defects in the Republic of Ireland in 2009-11

The aim of this study was to ascertain the incident rate of NTD during the period 2009-11 and describe epidemiologically NTD in Ireland. Methods Cases were ascertained through multiple sources, including three regional congenital anomaly registers, all maternity hospitals nationally and paediatric hospitals providing care for children with spina bifida in the Republic of Ireland during the period 2009-11.
